France sealed their place in the 2024 Olympic sevens final as they saw off South Africa 19 – 5 courtesy of an Antoine Dupont inspired second half surge.
Scoring in the dying seconds of the opening half through Tristan Leyds, South Africa looked set to pull off a second upset in a row.
However as they have done throughout the tournament, France upped the ante in the second half as they scored three tries as Rayan Rebbadj (2) and Jordan Sepho.
For South Africa who qualified for the knockouts courtesy of a big win over Japan having lost to Ireland and New Zealand in the pool stages still have a chance at medal in the third place play-off.
Facing them will be the loser of Fiji vs Australia which is currently under way.
For France, the chance of a Gold Medal in front of their own fans is the reason Dupont switched to 7s in 2024 and would be a crowning moment for one of the finest players in modern rugby.
